ORGANIC REACTIONS MECHANISM DEPARTMENT
The Department was founded in 1974 by Academician of the Ukr.SSR AS E.A.Shilov. In 1973-2008 Professor V.I.Staninets was the Head of the Department. Since 2009 Professor M.V.Vovk is at the head. The staff of the Department is as follows: 3 Doctors of Science, 10 PhDs, 7 engineers.
The priority direction of the research is study of the kinetics and mechanisms of the main types of organic reactions, such as addition, intramolecular cyclizations, oxidation, aromatic substitution, search and investigation of homogenic catalysts, establishment of intermediate reagent parts, molecular complexes, transient states of these reactions and connection of the mechanism with stereo-chemistry, hemo- and regioselectivity of the reaction products.
The Department conducts systematic research of stereochemistry of the electrophilic intramolecular cyclization of functionally substituted olefins and acetylens reactions, establishes mechanisms for cycle formation control, elaborates heterocyclic building blocks for application in the syntheses of model natural biologically active compounds. The synthesis method for polyfunctional partially hydrated imidazo- and thiazolopirimidines – prospective bio-active compounds, have been elaborated. The Department studies cyclizations of unsaturated functionally substituted compounds under action of electrophilic and radical fluorine reagents, establishes transformations mechanism, elaborates selective synthesis methods for fluorine-containing cyclic compounds demonstrating potential biological properties.
Selective catalysts for obtaining of para-dichlorobenzene and para-dichlorotoluene have been created. Collaboration of the IOCh NASU (Kyiv) and PPG Industries Inc. (USA) resulted in elaboration of the catalyst for chlorobenzene chlorination, containing iron chloride and cheap co-catalyst. The composition shows high (to 80%) para-selectivity and may be used in common technologies which usually use Lewis catalysts. A catalytic composition for toluene chlorination has been proposed, it ensures correlation of para-ortho chlorotoluene isomers about 1,4, what corresponds to the level of the best world Patents and may be used in technologies based on Lewis acids catalysis.
The work of the Department was awarded the State Premium of Ukraine on Science and Technology (1993), L.V.Pisarzhevskii Premium (1965) and A.I.Kiprianov Premium (2003).
