ORGANOFLUORINE COMPOUNDS CHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT
The Department was founded in 1965 by Professor Lev M. Yagupolskii. Professor Yurii L.Yagupolskii became the Head of the Department in 1988. The staff of the Department consists of 4 Doctors of Science, 11 PhDs and 10 engineers.
The priority research field is the chemistry of aromatic and heterocyclic compounds with fluorine-containing substituents. Investigations are directed to the elaboration of the synthetic methods for introduction of fluorine-containing groups to the organic compounds and study of their properties. For the first time heteroatom fluorine-containing group - OCF3 – substituent has been introduced in the aromatic ring. Electronic nature of more than 60 new fluorine-containing substituents has been established, their action on the strength of organic acids and bases has been determined, a guiding role in the reactions of electrophilic and nucleophilic substitution in aromatic nucleus has been studied.
Professor Lev M. Yagupolskii had formulated a principle of super strong electron-acceptor groups construction, exceeding in properties all the known earlier, this is considered to be a new scientific trend in the work of the Department. Using this principle, the scientists have discovered Kurcius and Lossene aza-reactions, Gofman rearrangements.
A nominal reaction of Buchvald-Hartwug-Yagupolskii – direct amination of haloarenes in the presence of palladium catalyst has been discovered.
New reactions of perfluoroalkyl groups introduction in organic compounds have been found, they are: ion-radical fluoroalkylation by perfluoroalkyliodides and bromides and electrophilic fluoroalkylation by perfluoroalkyliodonium salts and new type of compounds – diaryltrifluoromethylsulfonium salts (Ar2S+CF3 SbF6-).
Cyanine dyes with fluorine-containing substituents in heterocyclic nuclei and fluorine atoms and perfluoroalkyl groups in polymethine chain have been synthesized and studied. Highly effective sensitizer practically applied in production of color positive film has been created.
A general method for the synthesis of conjugated ?,?-diarylperfluoropolyenes – a new type of polyenic conjugated systems [Ar(CF=CF)nAr, n = 2-6] has been elaborated. It was established that electron effects transfer proceeds through perfluorinated polymethine chains what opens a wide prospective for creation of new type polymethine dyes with completely or partially fluorinated chain. Fundamental investigations in the field of organo-element fluorine compounds – silicon, tellurium, bismuth, platinum have won public acknowledgment. The methods for trifluoromethylation of organic compounds with the help of CF3SiMe3/F system have been elaborated.
In collaboration with the Institute of Chlorine Industry (Kyiv), we have elaborated and introduced the technology of herbicide “Treflan” at the plant in Navoi (Uzbekistan) with production volume 2 250 ton per year.
An installation for sulfur tetrafluoride production has been mounted at the Pilot Plant of the IOCh NASU what allowed to study chemistry of this fluorinating agent. The Department has synthesized and investigated original medicinal preparations for cardio-vascular diseases treatment.
