COLOUR AND STRUCTURE OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS DEPARTMENT

The Department was founded by Academician A.I.Kiprianov in 1945 and guided by him till 1972. Since 1972 till 1976 Candidate of Science V.M.Zubarovskii was the Head of the Department, since 1976 till 2005 Prof. O.I.Tolmachev.
Now the Department is guided by Prof., Dr. A.A.Ishchenko. The Department includes 4 Doctors of Science, 14 Candidates, and 7 engineers.
The priority research areas are: the synthesis of polymethine dyes and the studies on their electronic structure, spectral luminescent and nonlinear optical properties, solvatochromism, and aggregation as well as the elaboration of colour theory and development strategy for dye-based light energy converters.
Cationic and anionic polymethines, merocyanines, ketocyanines, and also mesoionic, squarilium, croconium, and difluoroboride zwitterionic dyes have been synthesized. Methods for the synthesis of stable polymethines which intensely absorb light in the near-IR spectral region (800-1700 nm) have been elaborated. Fundamental regularities have been found which relate colour and luminescent properties of dyes to their constitution and the nature of media including polymer matrices. The fundamentals of photonics of polymethine ionic pairs have been established. The nature and peculiarities of dye association including J-aggregation have been investigated.
The dyes have been elaborated which provide higher resolution and sensitivity of infrachromatic materials as compared to their best currently used analogues (Kodak Aerographic Film 3432). Among the dyes synthesized are those which allowed, for the first time, passive mode synchronization in the erbium laser (λem = 1540 nm). Highly efficient polymeric passive locks based on solid-state laser dyes (λem = 694, 1060, and 1300 nm) have been created. New types of active laser media based on asymmetric dyes with outstandingly wide absorption bands and large Stokes shifts have been discovered. Protective light filters for laser radiation with λem =  1060 nm have been elaborated which are more efficient than their hitherto known analogues. The dyes with pronounced nonlinear optical properties including two-photon characteristics have been synthesized. Promising dyes for holographic, electroluminescent, and photovoltaic media have been developed. The dyes for composites photopolymerizing under the action of semiconductor lasers (λem = 780, 830, 860, and 980 nm) have been synthesized. Fluorescent probes for medical and biological applications have been created. Chemosensors for food quality control have been elaborated.
